Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say early analysis indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
An important official commented the incident made him speechless and had to be resolved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
